Super Bowl Commercials

The Super Bowl is less than two weeks away. Crazy how time flies, and there were some crazy games in the playoffs as well. Not going to lie, kind of disappointed that Jordy Nelson doesn't get to play in the Superbowl, but oh well (my K-State bias coming through).

Whether you watch the Super Bowl for the game itself or for the commercials, probably several of you will be watching one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Every year, companies spend millions of dollars for advertising spots during the game. Several of these commercials are the chance for companies to make a big splash on advertising to kick off the new year.

So I got to think about the best Super Bowl commercials, and there was one that came to the top of my list. The Dodge Ram commercial, "So God Made a Farmer." You can watch the ad here.

I remember exactly where I was when this commercial aired. Several of my vet school classmates got together to watch the big game. We were all around visiting about the game, reflecting on life, and having fun. Then the commercial came on the television. Our attention all tuned into the tv, and nobody said a word. You could have heard a pen drop. It was that captivating!

Now this wasn't the first time I have heard this speech given by Paul Harvey before. He gave this speech at a National FFA convention in 1978. Now I wasn't around back then, but other people made me aware of it before because it had that much of an impact on them when they heard it in person. Paul Harvey was a radio icon that I listened to growing up as well. His "News and Comments" and "Rest of the Story" always provided great insight into things. In fact, we always tried to arrange lunch to occur after Paul Harvey's "News and Comments" concluded, so we could listen to it while working in the tractor.

Back to the ad by Dodge now. I tip my cap to the Dodge marketing people for taking the time to use expensive advertising to promote agriculture to the entire country. I could watch this ad over and over (in fact I did and recommend you do as well) to further gain knowledge and appreciation for what all the farmers and ranchers provide for this country. Thank you Dodge!

Now typically I always end my posts with a catchy phrase, "Until next time." Our own Dr. Dan Thomson ends his segments with, "I'll see you down the road." Today, I'll end with a phrase credited to Paul Harvey (and yes I hope you read it in his voice).

Silence fell on our small get together with friends last night as a stately and familiar voice rang through the room. We have two Dodges in the driveway, 4 generations of farmers in our family and bellies full of food all because God made a farmer.

For those of us raised by farmers, we've heard this poem and we grew up on Paul Harvey. I am so glad Dodge paid bookoo bucks to share it with the rest of America. My mom's vying for an encore of "So God Made A Farmer's Wife" and I wish Mr. Harvey were still around to do that for her!

Super Bowl of Food Safety!

Super Bowl Sunday is coming up. Grab your goodies, get a good couch, did you know that more big screen TVs are sold during Super Bowl Season than any other time of year? Yeah, so go get a big screen!

Food safety should always be kept in mind when making grub for friends. What's my favorite kitchen tool to use during a banging Super Bowl party?

SLOW COOKER

Best invention since hair spray, yes, that would be the slow cooker!

Have you thought about the correct temperatures, thawing practices and amount of food you can safely cook in a slow cooker? I didn't really think about it until I read the above article. I have also included a fact sheet for your info from the USDA.

I'm not really an NFL fan, so I'll be paying attention to who sings the National Anthem, who airs the funniest commercials and of course if anyone loses a piece of clothing in the halftime show! Will the wardrobe malfunction joke ever get old?

Super Bowl of Agriculture

The big game is tomorrow and while coaches are reviewing film, fans are preparing barbecue and the halftime entertainers are double checking their wardrobes to avoid any malfunctions.....Will that ever get old?

8 years later and the newscasters still bring that up!

Anyways, I ran across a website that only an Ag nerd would completely fall in love with. BUT if you aren't as crazy as some of us Ag nerds, you might just find it interesting to aid in consumer awareness about where food and agricultural products are produced across the US.

Super Bowl Food Will Be Super Safe!

Sorry for the cliche title.

An article on www.wishtv.com has highlighted the extra efforts being made by the city of Indianapolis and it's Division of Food and Consumer Safety to ensure food safety at the Super Bowl.

There are over 250 eateries, restaurants and food trucks that are to be inspected during the coming days of Super Bowl partying, including the day of the big event. Super Bowl food vendors will be monitored on the following criteria: getting food from an approved source, good personal hygiene, cooking temperatures, holding temperatures as well as cross contamination. These are all important measures in making sure that consumers are able to enjoy their food but don't transmit any food borne illnesses and can enjoy the Super Bowl experience.

The biggest piece of advice that Kelli Whiting, coordinator for the inspections, can give to consumers is “We want you to wash your hands, early and often,” Whiting said. “That’s the best way to help prevent the spread of disease.”

It sounds like Indy is on top of their game when it comes to food safety, so you Super Bowl patrons can rest assured that you'll be safe while you enjoy nachos, barbecue beef sandwiches, pretzels, bratwursts, chicken wings...

Oh my, I'm getting hungry.
